Whether it’s during harvest or mid-winter, a small issue can lead to big headaches if left unresolved. Below are eight common grain bin issues our customers face — and practical, do-it-yourself guidance to help you troubleshoot before calling in a technician.
First, check that the power source is connected and your breaker hasn’t tripped. Make sure any external switches are on. If power is good, inspect the fan motor for debris or ice buildup.
Uneven drying often comes from poor airflow. Check for blocked vents, debris in the fan housing, or overloaded grain depth. Adjust grain level for better circulation and ensure the fan is properly sealed to the bin.
Spoilage usually comes from poor aeration or warm spots. Stir grain if possible, and check for hot spots using your monitoring system. Look for clumping or off-smells that indicate moisture buildup.
Condensation often means poor ventilation. Run the fan periodically during warm daytime hours to equalize temperatures. Ensure eave vents and roof vents are open and unobstructed.
Surface rust is common in high-humidity zones. Clean the affected area with a wire brush, apply rust inhibitor, and seal with touch-up paint. Long-term, make sure downspouts and runoff aren’t splashing against the bin walls.
Shut off power before inspecting. Remove any grain buildup or foreign objects. Check for frozen or compacted grain at the intake and make sure the flighting isn’t bent or worn.
Check the wiring connections and batteries. If using a digital monitor, try a reset. Moisture or dust in the housing can cause faults — gently clean the sensor with a dry cloth.
Ice or grain pressure may be the culprit. Use warm water or de-icer on metal latches in winter. For lids, ensure counterweights or springs are intact and not jammed with debris or snow.
